El Paso police officers put life on the line for base pay of $47K
Oct 21, 2022
An officer shortage continues to plague the El Paso Police Department, worsening the manpower they have to protect the city.

It’s a growing problem, with a history, dating back to the 70s.

El Paso Police Department Sergeant Robert Gomez, who has been with the department for 25 years, said while this used to be seen as a noble profession, that’s not the case anymore and it’s showing in the numbers.

“We used to be able to pick from thousands of applicants, well now that pool has dwindled down to hundreds,” Gomez said.
