As the Holidays pass us by, I am reminded of my family and all the times I have spent without them during the holidays due to my choice in careers. I recall waking up early with my boys who couldn’t wait to open gifts and run outside into the cold to play. As police officers we do holidays a little different from the rest of the population because our schedules mandate it. We don’t always get to spend Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve with our families so we learn to adapt and so do our families. I remember spending that morning at 0200 Hrs with my sons opening gifts because I had to work the next day or just got off. Christmas Eve was just another day on patrol and not an evening spent at home or in church with loved ones. I don’t believe that Jesus Christ minded us celebrating his birth the day before or the day after because of what our profession does for the world. I can see him smiling down on us because our family and community came first no matter what.

I don’t ask for sympathy or want anybody to feel sorry for me because I would do it again for the extreme pleasure of serving the community in which I live. Being a Police Officer is the best occupation in the world to me, so don’t be sorry. As long as I got to spend quality time with my family that is all that really matters. Please take a moment to thank your family for what they sacrifice for us. Don’t forget the officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice and stop by their homes and say hello to their families who remain in silence. Remember that their dads, moms, brothers or sisters are not coming home and they need us for support and remembrance. Please don’t forget them. Don’t forget the retirees, medical or not, and their families who have given their entire life to this department and the City of El Paso. We are a Family in Blue and we must remember! We must always remember because if we don’t, all of us will be forgotten in time no matter what we have sacrificed. We keep our family and memories alive by what we do and who we remember. Please remember, please never forget! God bless each of you and may he watch over our families when we are here on earth or in his kingdom on the other side.
