Dear All,
There is no longer room on our memorial for fallen officers. I hope and pray we will never add another name to our Honor Roll Call; however doing the job we do, protecting our community and those that cannot protect themselves, the reality is that we may one day have to.
With this unfortunate possibility, the following is an update on the status of the Chuck Heinrich Park – Memorial Project. Two years ago, we founded and coordinated an Inaugural Fallen Officers Memorial Run. With your generous support, the race has matured and generated over $8,000 in donations, specifically for our Memorial.
This past March, I reached out to the El Paso Community College Architecture program at the Valle Verde campus with the vision of improving our memorial. Last month, Officer Paul Pacillas and I met with Mr. Moreno (instructor at EPPC) and several students that were entering their final architecture semesters. We shared the history of our department and the innovation needed for Chuck Heinrich Park. We highlighted its significance to not only the department, but to the families who have a loved one’s name engraved on the Memorial.
This month, the students have requested to meet with surviving family members to obtain their perspective on the Memorial. Officer Pacillas and I have contacted several of our families who have agreed to speak to the students. If you know our families, then you are aware they are very giving and kind, and understand the familiarity with which we are seen as part of their family, and this is why they have opted to help with the Memorial Project.
Prior to the completion of this semester, the architecture program will make a proposal to the EPMPOA, the Police Department and the City of a model architectural design and plan, so that the entire project and model can be reviewed and then approved. We are anticipating this to be ready for display by September 2015.
I am confident that the EPCC Architecture Program, with guidance from Mr. Moreno, will result in a breathtaking memorial that will be created for our Fallen Heroes, as deserved. I will continue to keep you posted on the progress as it is made available, keep an eye out for future information.
Remember - “The Story of Courage Resonates Past Its Presence”
Fraternally yours,
David Hernandez
